County grants two sign variances

By Pamela Permar-Shierling

Last week during the regular Glynn County Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting (Oct. 15), the commission granted two sign variances: one on St. Simons Island and one in Brunswick.

Glynn  County initiated the sign variance request for 501 Sea Island Road because the sign will have to be moved due to the roundabout planned for the intersection of Frederica and Sea Island Roads. The property frontage will change.

On St. Simons all businesses are limited to a maximum height of five feet for monument signs. The current sign on the property is seven feet tall. The request is for a seven ft. 6 in. monument sign which the commission approved.

The sign will be at the Frederica Road entrance and be identical in design, dimensions, and height to the existing sign according to the staff report.

Taco Bell, which is opening a location at 164 Altama Connector, was granted a sign variance to accommodate the company’s standard signage.

Glynn County’s ordinance limits all mainland business wall signs to a total of 24 sq. ft. Taco Bell’s request included three wall signs totaling  50 sq. ft. The company did reduce the monument sign request from 90 sq. ft. to 30 sq ft.

The only question the commission had was when would the restaurant be open. The answer: August 2027 if everything goes well.
