West Nile virus found in mosquito in Belle Point Creek area

 A mosquito sample collected on September 15 in the Belle Point Creek area near King Cotton Road was confirmed by Research Associates Laboratory yesterday, September 17, to have the West Nile virus.

As a precaution, targeted mosquito spraying and larval treatment were conducted in the area yesterday and again early this morning by Vector Disease Control International (VDCI), Glynn County’s mosquito control contractor.

VDCI technicians thoroughly inspected the area for mosquito breeding sites and treated mosquito larvae.  Enhanced population monitoring and testing, and mosquito control activities, will continue in the area, including additional spraying and larvicide applications. These efforts will remain in place until mosquito populations are diminished, and testing yields negative results for West Nile virus.

The positive test was found in mosquitoes, and there are currently no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Glynn County. The Georgia Coastal Health District has been notified.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and eliminating mosquito breeding opportunities around their homes.

Glynn County and VDCI will continue to monitor test results and will share information about any additional positive findings with the public.
