Glynn County Updates Ride Assistance Program to Help Residents Prepare for Hurricane Evacuations
Glynn County Emergency Management Agency is encouraging residents who may have no other reasonable means of leaving the area during a hurricane evacuation to register for the new Glynn County Ride Assistance Program.
The program is designed to help provide evacuation transportation for residents who need assistance getting from a designated evacuation transportation site and ultimately to a shelter farther inland.
“Preparing for an evacuation means knowing not only where you will go, but how you will get there,” said Glynn County Emergency Management Agency Director Andy Leanza. “The Ride Assistance Program is intended to help residents who may otherwise have no reasonable way to leave Glynn County when an evacuation is ordered.”
Residents are encouraged to register before hurricane season emergencies arise. Early registration allows emergency officials to better understand transportation needs and plan evacuation operations.
The Ride Assistance Program will only be activated when Glynn County emergency officials and local leadership determine that evacuation transportation assistance is needed.
The program does not provide door-to-door transportation. Residents who register will be responsible for getting themselves to the designated evacuation transportation site closest to their residence.
There are four designated transportation pickup sites in Glynn County: Harris Teeter on St. Simons, Glynn Place Mall, Mary Ross Park, and Lanier Plaza.
From those locations, evacuees will be transported to a designated shelter farther inland. Residents should be prepared for the trip to take several hours because of the distance to the shelter and potential traffic conditions during an evacuation.
Registration does not guarantee transportation, as space is limited. Residents are encouraged to register as early as possible.
