The City of Brunswick’s housing department will move forward with rehabilitating a house at 1701 Wolfe St. The city commission approved spending $150,000 on the rehabilitation during their Thursday, August 6 meeting.
The house will be used as temporary housing for those who are participating in the city’s Community HOME Investment Program (CHIP) program and who cannot live at home during the rehabilitation.
There will be utility and moving costs and probably a small rental cost to the persons who choose to live there.
The property was acquired through the Glynn Brunswick Land Bank Authority. The house, built in 1912, is expected to cost between $125,000 and $135,000 to rehabilitate; $15,000 has been built in as a contingency bringing the total cost to $150,000.
According to Chelsea Hill, Housing Program Director, the rehabilitation cost is approximately $50,000 less than the City’s average new construction project.
Once the temporary housing need for the CHIP Program has been fulfilled, the City may evaluate future uses of the property that continue to support affordable housing initiative.
The City’s Fiscal Year 2026-2027 budget supports the $619,000 housing program sbudget from American Rescue Plan Act Funds as well as a transfer from the general fund.
In other business the commission approved two new alcohol beverage licenses.
