The Glynn County Airport Commission has been recognized by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Aviation Programs Division for its outstanding efforts in promoting aviation and engaging the community through innovative educational programs, public outreach, and special events.

The award was presented during the Third Annual Georgia Aviation Programs Forum in Thomaston, Georgia, where airport representatives from across the state gathered for a day of training, collaboration, and professional development. The recognition honors airports that demonstrate exceptional leadership in advancing aviation awareness and community engagement.

The Glynn County Airport Commission was recognized for its commitment to inspiring future aviators, honoring those who have served, supporting humanitarian aviation missions, and showcasing the value of aviation throughout the Golden Isles. Among the initiatives highlighted by GDOT were:

Aviation Career Day, introducing local students to careers in aviation and aerospace.

The Coastal Georgia Honor Flight, supporting veterans through a meaningful community partnership.

Angel Flight missions, recognizing the vital role of volunteer pilots and humanitarian aviation in providing free air transportation for patients in need of medical care.

The Commission’s Pilot Recognition Program, celebrating aviation accomplishments and milestones.

The Golden Isles Airshow, which brings world-class aviation entertainment while inspiring the next generation of aviators and generating significant economic impact for the region.

A robust social media and marketing program that promotes airport activities, aviation education, community events, and the important role local airports play in the Golden Isles.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our staff, Airport Commissioners, volunteers, community partners, and aviation supporters who continually work to make our airports an asset to the Golden Isles,” said Executive Director Robert Burr. “We are honored to be recognized by the Georgia Department of Transportation and remain committed to promoting aviation, inspiring the next generation, supporting organizations that use aviation to change lives, and strengthening our connection with the community we serve.”

The Glynn County Airport Commission operates Brunswick Golden Isles Airport (BQK) and St. Simons Island Airport (SSI), providing critical infrastructure that supports business, tourism, emergency response, humanitarian missions, and economic development throughout the Golden Isles.

This statewide recognition reflects the Commission’s ongoing commitment to promoting aviation, fostering educational opportunities, supporting charitable aviation organizations, and enhancing public awareness of the many ways local airports contribute to the quality of life and economic vitality of the Golden Isles.
