City of Brunswick Receives “Project of the Year” Award for Albany Street Drainage Project
The Albany Street Drainage Improvement Project has been named Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Georgia Chapter. This recognition highlights the City of Brunswick’s ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure, enhancing public safety, and investing in long-term community resilience.
The Albany Street Drainage Improvement Project was designed to address chronic flooding issues that have impacted residents and businesses in the surrounding neighborhood for many years. Through strategic upgrades, modernized stormwater infrastructure, and collaboration across departments and partners, the project now provides meaningful relief during heavy rainfall and supports the City’s broader stormwater management goals.
Mayor Cosby Johnson said, “This award is a proud recognition of what Brunswick can accomplish when we invest wisely in our community. The Albany Street project came in at $3.6 million, and thanks to $2.2 million in grant funding, we were able to deliver this transformation while keeping the city’s SPLOST investment to just $1.4 million. Completed in eight months, from February to September, this project reflects our commitment to smart planning, fiscal responsibility, and building a stronger Brunswick for every resident.”
Director of Public Works and City Engineer Garrow Alberson said, “We are pleased to receive the award for the Albany Street Drainage Improvement project as APWA Project of the Year. This is the second year in a row that one of our projects has received this award. The Albany Street neighborhood has dealt with flooding problems for years, and it is great that we are able to provide some relief to the residents and business owners in the area. The award is a result of great work by the project team including city staff, engineering consultants and construction contractors.”
The City of Brunswick extends its gratitude to Goodwyn Mills Cawood, LLC, Woodward Construction Company, Inc., the project team, community partners, and the residents who supported the work throughout its development and construction. This award reflects the dedication and collaboration that drive Brunswick’s infrastructure improvements and enhance quality of life across the community.
