U.S. Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-1) spoke last night, Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the monthly meeting of the Golden Isles Council, Navy League of the United States, held at American Legion Post 166.

Carter brought members and guests up to date on military activity in the area and spoke about the importance of coastal Georgia to the nation’s defense. The region is home to a remarkable concentration of military installations, including Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, Townsend Bombing Range and Coast Guard Station Brunswick.

“Congressman Carter reminded us how much of our national defense depends on this part of Georgia, and how many important installations we have right here. Our council is proud to support them and the sea services of the United States,” said council President Glenn Cook.

The council also recognized Cadet Annakate Durant of the Glynn Academy Marine Corps JROTC as its Cadet of the Month. Council board member Stephanie Treece made the presentation.

Master Sergeant William Strohsahl of the Glynn Academy Marine Corps JROTC introduced the unit’s two senior cadet leaders: Cadet Capt. Gabriel Luna, the cadet commanding officer, and Cadet 1st Lt. Levi Van’t Land, the executive officer and Raider team commander. The cadets summarized the unit’s recent events and its work throughout the year, and spoke about the program’s role in developing young men and women in the local community.

Days before the meeting, the Glynn Academy male Raider team won first place in the All-Service Division at the JROTC National Raider Challenge, held Oct. 22-25 at Fort Knox, Ky., and hosted by U.S. Army Cadet Command. The team was scheduled to compete again Oct. 30 at the All-Service JROTC Raider National Championships in Molena, Ga.

The council’s next event is a celebration of the Navy and Marine Corps birthdays on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 166, 1013 Arthur J. Moore Drive. Retired Vice Adm. Al Konetzni, a former submarine force commander, will be the keynote speaker.

“We welcome anyone who would like to attend and learn more about the Navy League,” Cook said.

The Golden Isles Council of the Navy League of the United States is a 501(c)(3) civilian organization supporting the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine.

The council has adopted Coast Guard Station Brunswick, is adopting the submarine USS West Virginia, and supports Glynn Academy Marine Corps JROTC and Brunswick High School Navy JROTC. Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 166. For more information
