Only one person spoke against the Old Post Road rezoning last night (Sept. 17) during the Glynn County Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting.
The rezoning request, from Forest Agricultural (FA) to General Commercial (GC) for property located at 9385 Old Post Road, would allow a Dollar General Store to be built on the property.
The Mainland Planning Commission (MPC) approved both the rezoning request and the site plan for a Dollar General store at the intersection of Old Post Road and Highway 32 at their Sept. 1 meeting.
Jebediah Schwartz, who also spoke against the rezoning at the MPC meeting, told the BOC last night his issues were with what he called an unsafe mining operation adjoining the Dollar General property, additional traffic, and the Gopher tortoise.
He said he was not against the Dollar General store but he did not want it in that location.
Schwartz also asked for additional traffic enforcement in the area. He said the Golden Isles Speedway brings out ATVs which speed down Old Post Road.
BOC Chair Wayne Neal said, “The (police) Chief is here tonight and he heard you.”
In other business the BOC approved:
• 4150 Whitlock St. Rezone: from One Family Residential (R6) to Limited Industrial (LI) for commercial use, with a proposed metal storage building.
• 4305 Highway 82 Rezone: 1.87 acres Highway Commercial (HC) to Forest Agriculture (FA) to allow for residential development.
• abandonment of unimproved areas at 317 Broadway Street and 319 Broadway Street, St. Simons Island. According to staff the alley is not used by the public and the west portion of the alley has already been abandoned.
