The Glynn County Board of Education adopted a tentative millage rate of 14.9 mils during a special called meeting Wednesday, July 29. The millage rate was dropped to 14.9 for the 2024-2025 fiscal year and has remained the same.
Glynn County’s property tax digest grew 6.54% over the prior year. The net taxable digest is $7.8 billion. The five year average digest growth is 7.2%. One mil generates $7.388 million.
The rollback millage rate is 13.999 mils. Leaving the BOE millage rate at 14.9 mils is considered a 6.44% tax increase and state law requires that it be advertised as such.
Simply stated the rollback rate would generate the same property tax dollars as last year. The fiscal year 26-27 budget is based on the current millage rate of 14.9 mils.
Comparison of millage rate options:
• 14.9 mils provides the BOE with $558,000 more than budgeted.
• 14.65 mils provides $1.29 million less than budgeted
• 14.4 mills provides $3.14 million less than budgeted
• 13.99 mils (rollback rate) provides $6.16 million less than budgeted
The FY 2027 budget uses $1.7 million of the general fund balance leaving the system with an estimated fund balance of $27.1 million.
Three public hearings will be held: August 11 at noon; August 11 at 6 p.m.; August 18 at 6 p.m. Final approval is expected at the August 18 Special Called Board meeting.
