Golden Isles Penguin Project awards scholarships

The Golden Isles Penguin Project and Golden Isles Arts & Humanities recently awarded scholarships to three Penguin Project participants.  The scholarship is to assist either Artist or Mentor as they further their education whether attending college, technical school or a program designed to help them move forward after their high school career.

One Artist, Lucas Harlander, and two Mentors, Franziska Hatcher and Ryan Thompson, received the scholarships.  Lucas, who has been a part of the Penguin Project for the past four years,  will attend Coastal Pines Technical College to study marketing; Franziska, a Mentor for the past four years,  will attend the College of Coastal Georgia this fall to study nursing and continue to work with the Penguins while in school; and Ryan Thompson, who has been a Mentor for the past nine years, will attend the University of North Florida and major in Marine and Coastal Biology and continue her ASL (American Sign Language) studies.

The Golden Isles Penguin Project is a musical theatre production that casts children and young adults with disabilities in all roles.  Artists ages 10 and up take on all the roles and are supported on stage by Mentors, young people without disabilities, who assist them as needed while participating in the performance.
