Cinema Gourmet Kicks Off with Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds
Cinema Gourmet, Golden Isles Arts & Humanities’ popular series pairing delicious food with great films, kicks off its season on Thursday, October 8 with the Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful horror thriller, The Birds. The film’s screening and discussion are paired with the culinary delights of Chef Judah Lynch and Indigo Shanty. The evening’s events begin with delicious food at 6:30 p.m.
The Birds (1963) tells the story of the malicious, unexplained attacks by marauding birds of all shapes and sizes on the residents of Bodega Bay. Hitchcock employed thousands of real, trained birds and his own filmmaking ingenuity to create this psychologically complicated and eerily quiet study of violence. The film stars Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, and Suzanne Pleshette, with sound design by noted composer Bernard Hermann. Celebrated for its groundbreaking special effect and eerie lack of traditional background music, it has had a lasting impact on the monster and disaster film genres and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
Cinema Gourmet will offer five more screenings during the season: the dark satirical comedy-drama, Network starring Faye Dunaway, Willilam Holden and Peter Finch on November 12; The Grapes of Wrath based on the John Steinback novel and starring Henry Fonda on January 14, 2027; In the Heat of the Night, one of the most important films of the 1960s starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger on February 11; the satirical comedy drama starring Dustin Hoffman, The Graduate, on March 11; and the hilarious parody of the 1930s Universal horror films, Young Frankenstein, on April 8.
Seating is limited for the food, talk and movie, so audience members are encouraged to purchase their tickets early. The deadline for buying tickets for The Birds is midnight on Monday, October 5th. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by phone with a credit card or in person at the Ritz Theatre, Tuesdays through Fridays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
