There were two contested county commission seats in yesterday’s primaries. District 4 incumbent David Sweat handily defeated Jonathan Thornton 75-25. Sweat will defend his seat in November against former Brunswick Mayor Cornell Harvey, who was unopposed in the Democrat primary.
The District 3 County commission seat being vacated by Chairman Wayne Neal was won by Dane Hutcheson 72%-28% over Miranda Music Smith. Hutcheson will face no Democratic opposition in the fall.
The US Senate Seat being sought by District One congressman Buddy Carter will go to a runoff, but Carter will not be involved. He finished third behind Mike Collins, who had 41 percent of the vote and Derek Dooley, who pulled 29% of the vote. Carter received 26% of the vote. The runoff winner will face Senator Jon Ossoff in the fall.
The Republican gubernatorial primary will also go to a runoff, as no candidate received fifty percent plus one vote. The top two vote getters in a crowded field were Burt Jones with 38.5% and Rick Jackson with 33%. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won the crowded Democrat primary outright with 58% of the vote and will face the winner of the Republican runoff in November.
Overall the turnout in Glynn County was only 25.5%
