HCP living shoreline work begun

Work has begun on the Howard Coffin Park Living Shoreline Project, so you may notice increased activity in the area over the next several weeks.

This project will help protect the park’s tidal canal and improve resilience in our coastal environment. The work includes:

• Living shoreline bank stabilization along the tidal canal behind the administration building and water storage facility

• Stabilization will extend from about 120 feet upstream of the access road crossing to the pipe crossing under Highway 17

• Replacement of an existing pipe under the access road with a new box culvert to support wildlife passage

• Improvements in low-lying areas between the canal and the walking track parking lot to help reduce tidal encroachment on the trail and parking area

The Howard Coffin Park shoreline stabilization project was identified in a 2020 Shoreline Assessment and Resilience Plan sponsored by the City of Brunswick and Glynn County and is fully funded by $450,000 in donations provided by the Georgia Power Foundation and Georgia Power through the Georgia Conservancy.

Howard Coffin Park Living Shoreline and Berm

Howard Coffin Park is Brunswick’s largest park and contains numerous community amenities including the half Mile ParCourse Fitness Trail.

A small waterway flows through the park, past a Joint Water & Sewer Commission well pump. This waterway is currently experiencing erosion due to stormwater runoff and high tide flooding. The proposed living streambank project will install flexamat and natural vegetation to prevent further erosion and reestablish bankside habitat, protecting the well pump station.

A berm will be constructed to protect the ParCourse Fitness Trail, restoring community access during high tide events. The support of Georgia Power Foundation will fully fund the design, permitting and construction of this living shoreline.
