SSI GATEWAY PROJECT ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD INVESTIGATION

Beginning Monday, May 11 the public may observe archaeological personnel conducting field investigations in areas along Demere Rd, Kings Way and Sea Island Rd associated with the St. Simons Island Gateway Project. The areas of work are indicated on the attached site map and are located at the or near the intersections of Demere Rd and Sea Island Rd and Kings Way and Sea Island Rd and Demere Rd and F.J Torras Causeway.

As part of the project development and environmental review process, archaeological research activities are being conducted to evaluate potential historic and cultural resources within the project area. This work is being performed in coordination with applicable state and federal review requirements.

Residents and visitors may observe personnel performing hand excavation and archaeological testing activities throughout portions of the project corridor. The field work is anticipated to last approximately five (5) days.

The investigation is expected to include:
• Several archaeological test pits arranged on a planned grid pattern
• Hand digging methods for archaeological research purposes
• Excavations approximately 4 to 5 feet in depth

These activities are routine and necessary components of infrastructure planning and environmental compliance efforts. Every effort will be made to minimize disruptions to the public during the investigation process.
