St. Simons resident Gen. Magnus named to Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame

Gen. Robert Magnus (USMC Ret.)
Brooklyn native and current resident of St. Simons Island, retired 4-Star General Robert Magnus, has been inducted into the 2026 Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame (GMVHOF)
Announcement of the honor, together with 15 other deserving Georgia veterans, was made by GMVHOF President and CEO Col. Rick White (USA-Ret).
Robert Magnus joined Navy JROTC as a Long Island junior in high school and earned a Navy ROTC scholarship to the University of Virginia where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
General Magnus’ 39-year career encompassed four deployments with the Landing Force Sixth Fleet, as well as high level staff assignments in Marine Aviation; as Deputy Commander, Marine Forces Pacific; and as Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources.
Gen. Magnus was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal (2 awards), Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Joint Meritorious Unit Award among several other medals for meritorious service.
At the conclusion of his military career Gen. Magnus served as the 30th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps and member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and was the last Marine Corps officer who had deployed during the Vietnam War.
Upon his retirement General Magnus has been active in many veterans organizations including the Marine Corps League, Navy League, Disabled and Paralyzed Veterans, Military Officers Association, Jewish War Veterans and the VFW.
According to Col. White, Hall of Fame nominees must have ties to Georgia and qualify in one of three categories: valor for heroic action in combat; outstanding achievement while in service; or significant local, state or national contributions after leaving active duty.
“This year’s honorees will be inducted during the 14th Annual Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame Ceremony and Banquet at noon on Saturday, November 7, in St. Luke Ministry Center, 301 11th St. in Columbus,” said Col. White. He advises that while this event is open to the public, seating is limited. Advance reservation details may be accessed on the Hall of Fame website at
