Renown weather forecaster to Speak to America’s Boating Club. Public invited

Andrew Shashy

Andrew Shashy, Lead Forecaster with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, will speak to America’s Boating Club Golden Isles Tuesday, July 21. Shashy’s topic: “Weather Wisdom for Coastal Boaters.”

The event is free and open to the public at the University of Georgia Marine Extension, 715 Bay Street in Brunswick. Seating is limited, and advance registration is encouraged at GISPS.org.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with complimentary light hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and the hour-long presentation starts at 7:00 p.m. Although designed with boaters in mind, organizers say the presentation is equally valuable for anglers, paddlers, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, beachgoers, and anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors in Coastal Georgia.

The program promises much more than a traditional weather presentation. With more than 25 years of forecasting experience, Shashy will explain how weather forecasts are created, what they really mean for people on the water, and how anyone—from seasoned captains to weekend kayakers—can recognize the subtle signs that changing weather is on the way. He will share practical insights into marine forecasting for the Georgia coast, interpreting radar and marine weather reports, recognizing local weather patterns, and understanding the visual clues nature often provides before conditions begin to change

“Understanding weather is one of the most important skills anyone on the water can have,” said Cynthia Lamb, Commander of America’s Boating Club Golden Isles. “Andrew has an incredible ability to make weather understandable, practical, and engaging. Whether you own a boat, fish the local waters, paddle our rivers, or simply enjoy being outdoors, you’ll come away seeing our coastal weather in a whole new way. We’re excited to learn from Mr. Sashay.”

Shashy’s passion for weather began at an early age. He earned his meteorology degree from Florida State University and has spent decades helping communities better understand the science behind every forecast.

Before joining the National Weather Service office in Jacksonville, Shashy worked at both the National Hurricane Center in Miami and the Ocean Prediction Center in Maryland, helping forecast everything from everyday weather to some of the nation’s most significant storms. During his career, he has analyzed and forecast major hurricanes, including Matthew, Irma, and Michael, as well as countless severe weather events affecting the Southeast.

America’s Boating Club Golden Isles is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safe boating through education, community service, and fellowship. The club offers boating courses, educational seminars, vessel safety checks, and on-the-water activities throughout Coastal Georgia.
