After two days of early voting, the turnout in the runoff election is 1.8% in Glynn County, with 1090 ballots cast. 992 of the votes are in person, while 98 have been absentee by mail. Early voting continues each day this week from 8 to 5. After Friday the polls will remain closed until Tuesday, when they’ll open at all locations from 7 to 7.
Darius Slay held a big retirement party on the campus at Brunswick High Saturday. The Pirates alum recently retired after a 13-year career in the National Football League which saw him make the Pro Bowl six times and win a Super Bowl ring.
The burn ban and state of emergency in Brantley County were lifted Sunday night. Brantley residents can once again burn in accordance with county and state guidelines. If your burn pile is larger than six squaare feet you must contact the Brantley County Fire Department to report it. The ban had been in place since shortly before the Highway 82 fire in which 22 thousand acres burned and more than 100 homes were destroyed.
The international union for Conservation of Nature announced they have recommended the Okefenokee be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The committee that votes on the matter meets next month in Busan, South Korea. The endorsement is said to be a major step forward in the quest to get the Okefenokee on the World Heritage list.
