Along with telling kids the importance of eating right and getting plenty of exercise every day, Merrill told them to set goals and strive for them. "Don't let people tell you you can't do something," said Merrill , "don't let them tell you you are crazy. People said that to me when I decided to run from Boston to Key West. But it's not my job to prove them wrong. I'm doing it because I decided to and I set a goal to do it." Merrill didn't sugarcoat his words to the kids any more than he did with the adults at City Hall. "There will be hard times," said Merrill, "But when you hit the tough spots you have got to find another way. You find another way and keep going."
